The mission of the Department of Systematic and Evolutionary Botany and its associated collections (the New and Old Botanic Gardens, Herbarium, and Library) is to:
- increase knowledge about plant diversity, the processes and patterns of plant evolution, the relationships between plants and other organisms and aspects of plant conservation.
- organize this knowledge using information systems that allow efficient retrieval of data about plant diversity held in living and preserved collections
- disseminate established and cutting-edge knowledge of plants to the scientific community, students at all stages from kindergarten to University, and the general public through lectures, courses, field excursions and exhibitions.
